Can you access your messenger account at all? Because if it unfreezes a while afterwards you can always set offline messages to appear as an icon in the menu thing (one such icon being the Plus! icon):
Tools -> Options -> Messages tab
There is an option to show your offline messages after you log in, or as an icon.
