Because you need to have a non-proportional font (or 'fixed width' font) selected in your conversation window to show ascii
art, like Courier New.
Propertional fonts like Arial have different widths (pitches) for each character making that ascii images will not be aligned properly...
Using a proportional font like Arial, you get:
