Since media psm can be handled by script to get a coloured psm, and also to personalize/enhance your "what i'm listening to" standard feature, I would suggest to make a script that combines these two things and works like this:
1 store and apply a coloured message for "normal" usage
2 store formatting settings to enhance "what I'm listening to" or, if nothing set, display the standard infos that are usually shown when using Windows Media Player
3 In a future, add support for other players, or give native support for a player of the scripter's choice..
