You are right. You know that XMLHttpRequest tries to be UTF-8.
Many times it doesn't work on a non-UTF8 sites.

I'm pretty sure that there must be some workarounds.. I will look at it.

This code from my script kicks the -dt-'s one away.
From -dt-'s code, I also pretty sure that there must be
some workarounds, because we hook the function at
different places.
