I stole all my contact's IP's, then I can simply check to see if they really are online or not. 
There are a few problems with that still:
- The person may have a high speed internet connection which never disconnects making you think they are still online.
- The person may be on the internet, but not on WLM
- The person may have a dynamic ip. That may lead you to thinking that the person is online, but instead it might be someone else that is online
- There are a many more reasons why this will not work, but there is still that off chance that it may work(highly unlikely though)
