- Go to your contactlist and select the menu: Tools > Options > Messages
Check if "Automatically keep a history of my conversations" is enabled.
In case it isn't, proceed to step 3.
In case it is, check the folder name under "Save my conversations in this folder". Remember it carefully.
- Open Windows Explorer and navigate to that directory you've found in step 1.
(the shortcut key for starting Windows Explorer is <WIN><E>. And "Windows Explorer" is not "Internet Explorer")
In this directory you'll find all the chat logs made by Messenger. Search for the one of your friend and double click the file. The file will open up in your browser and you will be able to see the log. If you're in luck, the offline message will have been logged.
- Do you have the addon "Messenger Plus!" installed? If so, Messenger Plus! can log chats on its own. And it does this by default. So unless you changed any logging options (which I strongly doubt seeing that you don't know what logging is), Messenger Plus! would have logged the conversation also.
To find out where the log is you need to go to your contactlist and select the menu: Plus! > Chat Log Viewer.
The Chat Log Viewer from Messenger Plus! will pop up and here you can browse all the stored chat logs made by Messenger Plus!. Find the one from your friend...
The above is basically what MattyRid said, but in a more clear and detailed manner.

the first one I tried it said ,no matches meets ur conatct and also no bla bla bla exist,
Do not type the name or email of your friend. Instead search your friend in the list and select him/her.
The word wheel ("find a contact" feature) of Messenger has big shortcommings and will not always list the proper contacts when you type in a part of their name or email address.

MattyRid didn't gave the exactly correct menu names, but the names are very similar nonetheless. See my explaination above.
