If Pong response is taken, it means that your contact has Messenger Plus!, but if Pong response isn't taken, it DOESN'T MEAN THAT YOUR CONTACT DOESN'T HAVE MESSENGER PLUS! Therefore, if you want colorful nicknames, just use it. Don't worry about your contacts. (You can always recommend them Messenger Plus! )

I didn't understand how Plus! will make the difference between annoyance and getting attention but you can disable nudges in Windows Live Messenger's options.
