You can't see custom emoticons in peoples names, not even with Plus! installed.
Can you take a screenshot of what it shows and what it should show?
Edit: you'll probably be forced to update to Windows Live Messenger 8.1 soon, if not already (webcam vulnerability present in MSN Messenger 6.2, 7.0 (minus 7.0.0820), 7.5 and Windows Live Messenger 8.0). This will also mean the Plus! version you are using will no longer work on your messenger, you can get the version for Windows Live Messenger at
http://www.msgpluslive.net/download/ (don't uninstall Plus!3 before installing so where possible your current settings will be migrated to Plus!Live).
