Windows Live Messenger truncates long nicknames in its own pop up toasts so the codes may appear if your contacts use BBcode style. Make sure that your contact has a short nick and less formatting on it (try it with one who have at most ten characters including the formatting codes) I recommend you to use MsgPlus!'s own sign-in notification toasts instead of WLM's, you won't encounter this problem with them.
