You have two choices that are quite small and effective.  With the combination of the two and using them correctly then you will struggle to make the formatting code smaller.  The biggest problem with changing them again is the backwards compatibility and people having to learn something else. In my honest opinion, it would be a lot better to have a lightly smaller name or PSM (or learning to use the formatting codes better) rather than trying to implement a new code for formatting.

Also, if we use something other than the 100 set colours by windows and the 6 character hexadecimal format would hinder the the functionality of the colouring system.
