Yeah i think your fix was a mere co-incidence. As mine's been stuck for days now

Just got it fixed by changing the registry key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger\PerPassportSettings\#########\ExpandConvYouMeArea

To 0
