As long as all your songs are still in iTunes you shouldn't lose them if you have to restore, but if you don't have to restore your iPod then nothing will be lost because it modifies the firmware. If you don't trust iTunes you could always enable disk use and copy everything on your iPod
(Don't forget to show hidden files so you can copy the iPod_control folder) to a backup folder.
