RE: I take it I'm the only one with this problem with 9.0??
His point is that by installing 9.0 you might have changed/damaged stuff.
Installing a newer version like that will obviously overwrite files and settings from an older version. Even if you uninstall the new version you will be left with certain things in such a way that the older version now uses (incompatible) stuff from the newer version. This is not uncommon and happens quite a lot and one of the reasons why non-beta testers should not use betas because they do not have the information needed to work properly with a beta and deal with possible known issues.
That is what he meant with "not if you installed 9.0 first"; thus, first as in: before installing and/or using 8.5 again for the second time. You have used 9.0 first, before using 8.5 now.
I suggest you do a complete clean install. That means manually removing everything from Messenger before re-installing it. And with everything I mean everything: registry keys (and I'm not just talking about the obvious keys under "Software/Messenger"), cache files, local data storages, restoring DLLs in the System directory, etc...
EDIT: follow the link MeEtc posted below. Although that doesn't reset everything back either. Some DLLs which were installed and other things can not be 'reset' with that. Normally that isn't needed either, but in this case it might be.
