Yes, I think this would be less confusing for others and would prove to be nice.

I, for one, prefer the window to be compact. I don't need to see people's display pictures especially on the contact list as I find its too small anyway. Perhaps if its possible, to default the contact list to display a display picture, but still have an option to turn it off.
