That is a better idea, but I don't think you get to see the IP address of your contacts except during p2p protocol messages such as file transfers and activities. It could be done with a script running on the first computer that responds to a certain phrase (and password?) and send a file containing prefs. This would probably need you to restart messenger though and you would have to log in without your prefs for a while.
FTP server would be a good idea, if everybody had access to one. Looks like Patch is gonna have to do a partnership deal with a hosting company
