There'd be no point if they weren't recognised by the Messenger protocol anymore
IMHO, ways to change status to the ones other than Available (Online), Away, Busy and Appear Offline, such as commands or personalized status window, should be hidden from the Windows Live Messenger 2009 users without waiting a forced upgrade from WLM.
But at the moment they can still be detected by users of WLM 8.5, so there's still a point in having them there.....only once 8.5 is no longer useable should they be removed.
For example, i'm using WLM 2009, but if i type /brb in a conversation then 8.5 users will see me as set to be right back.....so it's still valid
