Just though I'd say that I had the same error - 8004888d, when I typed in the username it would take a while to show up and wouldn't sign in at all. Reinstalling and System Restore and loads of other things I tried didn't help, however Happy dad's solution worked and fixed it right up! Just saying in case someones having the same kind of problem
