You can try using
Adium and
this addon for it -- I haven't tried it myself, but it seems to be intended exactly for solving this problem.
I am not aware of anything you can do for the Microsoft client on a Mac -- other than running the Windows one and MsgPlus! under Parallels or VMware Fusion, which is probably more trouble than I'd go through for an instant messaging client myself.
