I may have the answer to your problem as I had it myself. Try right click on your messenger icon, go to properties,go to compatibility. If run for windows 95 ticked, untick it. I f run in 256 colours is ticked, untick it. I did this and now I have messenger running again. I hope this helps you.Best wishes Andy.
