am using VISTA HOME,got the same problem before but was able to fix it by disabling "FIRSTPACKET" on my NVIDIA folder.
click START
ALL PROGRAMS
click NVIDIA CORPORATION
click NVIDIA CONTROL PANEL to expand it
click NETWORKING
on the CONFIGURE FIRSTPACKET SETTINGS put mark on DISABLE FIRSTPACKET save it and log on to WINDOWS LIVE MESSENGER.
