gadgets/widgets are very resource low and shouldn't be using any more resources than any other solution (browser bar, extra program to take over system clock, etc). So I think this would be your best bet anyways.
After a lot of tweaking (removing sidebar, search toolbar, etc.) I managed to get a
pretty good setup and it doesn't use up many resources (default setup uses ~40,000k whereas my tweaked uses ~10,000k). There doesn't appear to be a calendar countdown gadget, but the calendar & agenda is pretty good.
