So you're having problems with the default emoticons with the skin - they're corrupted.

Try removing the skin, restarting WLM, then downloading and importing the skin again. That should fix it.

Also there should be an option to turn of the custom default emoticons, on your contacts list if you click the Plus! icon > Messenger Skin > Skin Options.
