I hope someone knows how to correct this

Out of the blue, damn pc gremlins, now every time messenger starts, it displays a box that someone has added me--you know the box!
But this is for anyone and everyone that i have ever added or they have added!!!!!
400 boxes! and they have to be cancelled or deleted individually!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can anyone help me correct this? It happened before but have no idea how it corrected itself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't want to uninstall and re-install, i lose all my emoticons


there has to be an easy fix!

You won't lose your emoticons uninstalling and reinstalling WLM, so you can try (but if you wanna be sure you can manually save them saving the folder %USERPROFILE%\Local settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger\"username@provider.xxx", where you find a folder named with your e-mail address instead of "username@provider.xxx". I don't know if the folder Local settings exists, I had to translate his name).

No you won't, they're still stored .

Everytime I've had to re-install I've lost them...

So I've got it! Even my translation was right!

Thx but as everyone knows, you always lose your custom emoticons!!!

Still, anyone know why messenger would start doing this? I checked the box in preferences to not show when someone adds me, but I would still like to see when someone does, thats' just a band aid for the real problem.

If you want to backup your custom stuff (although I never lose mine, but if you do) here's how:

Click the Start button, then click Run.

Type in:
%USERPROFILE%\Local settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger\

Press OK. Then copy and paste the folder with your e-mail address to somewhere (e.g. desktop).

Now all your custom stuff is backed up and you can move the folder back after you've repaired WLM.

Repair: Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Messenger Plus! Live > Click 'Repair Messenger' and follow the instructions. Afterwards, sign-in and see if the problem is still there. If that doesn't work...

Re-install: In Add/Remove Programs, go down to Windows Live Messenger and click Remove. Follow instructions to remove it. Restart your computer. Download and install Messenger, see if you have the same problem.

If Messenger is still doing the same thing, you're going to have to follow CookieRevised's guide. This will remove anything related to Messenger (including all files, registry keys, custom stuff, etc), so there should be no problems afterwards.

Just as a little note, I've also had this problem. It doesn't usually seem to matter where I sign in. It's happened a few times on old accounts and on my most recent account (which is why I had to re-add some of you to a new account).

It is a pain in the ass and I haven't actually found a way to stop it except for not using the account for AGES (don't know if there is some sort of expiry to the add request?
