for you specific problem there might be a far more elegant but fancy solution. Why not hook up your PC to your TV? In that way you can zap to the channel to see your PC screen in front of you in bed if needed.
To do this you need a graphics card which is capable of outputting a TV-signal (almost always present in laptops).
