If this sort of stuff interests you, you should take a look at Coyotos, which we're hoping to get the Hurd running on soon. It's pretty much persistent, which means you can pull the plug on your machine, plug it back in, and it would be like nothing happened, save for stateful things like network connections have to be restarted.
There are much cooler things about it than that, but I still think that's completely kick ass.

Children try, fail, and then try again, and succeed - maybe on the second, or even fifth retry. But the thing is that they keep at it and overcome the problems in the end.
