Make sure you didn't change the status to the same one used in your personalized status.
eg: If your real WLM status in a personalized status is 'Busy', and you change your status manually to 'Busy' then no change will be made.
Otherwise, the status and personal message should change.
It does here, in XP SP3 as well as in Vista Ultimate, no problems at all...
I usually change from away to available fyi
