I assume the just block their clients, not the protocol, after all, they claim the are blocking the clients because a security risk. Third party clients don't have this particular risk.

Windows Messenger 5 and MSN Messenger 5 (and 7 still works too I believe) are probably not affected by this security risk either, which would explain why they are still keeping those.
