I downloaded messenger plus live to my mac but now I'm receiving a command that states: "the link needs to be opened with an application/Choose an app...and I have NO idea what to do from there to begin using mpl?

Messenger Plus! Live is only available on Windows sorry.

The only thing needed to use Messenger Plus! Live is Windows Live Messenger  which requires Windows XP or above.

Messenger Plus! Live is compatible with Windows Live Messenger 8.0 to 14.0 (2009) and can be installed on 32bit and 64bit versions of Windows XP to Windows 7.

I googled messenger plus live for mac and it took me to a link where I was able to download a file that goes by a different name than the windows version.  Are you saying that I cannot use the downloaded version?

Why is it called apple live messenger then if one does not exist?

What file are you trying to download and were are you getting it from.

Warning: The file is most likely Mal-Ware or a Virus!

Bottomline: You cannot have Messenger Plus! for Mac.

Do not download from anywhere else as the chance is high it is a scam, virus or other malware. So make sure you download from a Microsoft site.

As Chrissy pointed out, there is no Messenger Plus! Live for Mac. Anything you find which claims to be Messener Plus! for Mac is absolute 100% FAKE and is without any doubt a virus or other malware.

Note that Messenger Plus! Live is an addon for Windows Live Messenger (on Windows). You still chat with Windows Live Messenger. Messenger Plus! simply adds more functionality to Windows Live Messenger. In other words: both are two seperate programs, and Messenger Plus! needs Windows Live Messenger to be installed.
