I have Vista and just finished the huge essentials 2011 update. Now, I no longer have the messenger icon in the notification area. How do I get it back (I have nothing "hidden")?

You don't, Windows Live Messenger 2011 doesn't have a "Tray Icon mode".

Then how do you click on it to start a conversation? When I did my husband's computer, it still showed up, so why not on mine? They are both Vista.

[I'm on Windows 7, but it works the same way in Vista if I remember it well]
Just open it from the taskbar, it goes there when you press Close.

It doesn't open, that's the problem. From Start, I typed messenger and clicked on Windows Live Messenger so I know it's running but that's it.
http://www.bassett.net/storage/notificationarea.jpg shows what's in notification area - no little green man like there used to be. No way to see which of my contacts are on, no way to start a chat, nothing.

well, after 3 times rebooting, I now have the little green man where he belongs in the notification area
