That would be a nice feature indeed and shouldn't be too unlikely to be added in the future.
Meanwhile, you might already know these methods:
-Hovering over contacts in your contact list also displays their E-mail.
-If you enter (a part) of a contact's E-mail address, it will also search for contacts with that e-mail address.
