I had Windows Messenger disabled (via set access/defaults), and I updated to version 5, and enabled the program again. Now, even when I go there and set it to enabled, the program doesn't work... It won't run at all.
I tried reinstalling, deleting registry entries, everything, it won't work. Any suggestions?
If you have Windows XP Professional do the following,
Click on Start > Run > type "gpedit.msc" (without the quotes)
Click on Administrative Tools
Click on Windows Components
Click on Windows Messenger
Double Click each Setting on the right side and Set to Not Configured.
Should be able to run them now.

Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
Locate and click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft
On the Edit menu, point to New, click Key, and then type Messenger for the name of the new registry key.
Locate and click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Messenger
On the Edit menu, point to New, click Key, and then type Client for the name of the new registry key.
Locate and click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Messenger\Client
On the Edit menu, point to New, click DWORD Value, and then type PreventRun for the name of the new DWORD value.
Right-click the PreventRun value that you created, click Modify, type 0 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
Quit Registry Editor.
