O.P. Huh?  Registry Settings
Patchou,

Just out of interest, why are the settings for Msg Plus! 3, stored in the location of Msg Plus! 2's i.e.

HKCU\Software\Patchou\MsgPlus2
HKLM\Software\Pathcou\MsgPlus2

Will this be changing in a future Plus! 3 update?

If anybody else knows, please let me know (i searched the forum, but its awkward choosing the correct keywords :S)

Tah,

Hah

This has nothing todo with being lazy :dodgy:

It is for compatibility for all the plus settings (he confirmed this somewhere on the forums, but it is indeed a pain to search for it ;))... I doubt it will change any time soon...

btw: That's the major drawback of putting version numbers in registry keys and directory names, if the version changes, everything must change also (and maybe cause trouble for "n00b" people), or stay with the old number... That's why I never let settings and directories depend on version numbers... (and that's both for when I'm programming and/or when I'm installing stuff)

O.P. RE: Registry Settings
It just seems unprofessional and like you said..lazy (sorry patchou). I understand the need for backwards compatibility, but it would take a c++ setup program less than a second to move the registry entries from MsgPlus2 to MsgPlus3.

Also, you could do it the way Microsoft have for there Windows entries. They use software\microsoft\windows\current version\ - i.e. software\patchou\msgplus\current version\ ...

Im been picky, but i want to make a plus loader for myself and want to know if its going to be changed thats all.

RE: Registry Settings
wow posted at the exact same time ;)

anyways, If he changes it, I would suggest to him to not change it to "MsgPlus3" but to "MsgPlus" (for the reasons in my previous post).
(and also, there is no need for "current version"....)

But I strongly doubt he will change it to anything. It will be "msgplus2" for a long while I assume...

What about plugins needing the regsettings ?
Won't they refer to MsgPlus2 ? (those created before the release of Plus3)

That doesn't matter... reread my post again ;)... even if plugins didn't exist it would still be msgplus2....

If u wanna delete plus!2 folder (not REGISTRY) and u get a warning that a certain dll is still in use (prolly a plugin dll) when u try to delete (keep messenger and plus running whilst trying that), write down the name of that dll..make sure its in the correct folder under plus!3 (if not there already copy it there)... and register it in the plus!3 folder (example: Start > run > type in: RegSvr32 "c:\program files\messenger plus! 3\plugins\MSSpeechForMSGPlus.dll" ) close down messenger completely then restart and try delete plus!2 folder again...repeat all those steps i described untill u can remove Plus!2 folder withouth any warnings ;)

If all's correct new plugins should install into plus!3 folder.

Use a regcleaner to clean up ur registry ;) a good one can be found here: http://www.tweaknow.com/RegCleaner.html

Edit: I know it doesnt change that its still named MsgPlus!2 in the registry but it saves u some space on ur HD (folder and subfolders wont be deleted if one or more files are still in use ):D

RE: Registry Settings
I told Patchou about that in the beta testing and he said something like "these small problems can be considered known limitations for now… I’ll look at these problems when I’ll have more time" (he was talking about other things too).

IMO the best would have been that the setup copies the msgplus2 registry settings into msgplus3 or just msgplus. Maybe another work arround is having a key in msgplus that points to the current version keys (msgplus2 or msgplus3 or etc....)

Anyway, I don't think he changes that soon :P

RE: Registry Settings
The key in the registry was kept "msgplus2" so that all the other programs made for Plus! (like plugins or other Messenger tools) stay compatible. It will not be changed :).
