When i was on dialup, an icon with 2 computers on it would appear on the system tray when i was connected on the internet. When i double clicked on them, it would tell me how many bytes i had received and sent on that connection.

I have now changed to broadband, and my computer no longer shows this information.

Is there any software I can download to show this?

No.
But if you enter Network Connection Manager, right click the currect connection icons, and check the box saying "Show icon in system tray when connected", it wil reappear (if I have understood you correctly)

(The names and phrases are loosely translated from my Norwegian XP Pro OS)

a very good tool if u had broadband is http://www.dumeter.com/ so you can tell what you current speeds are

That doesn't show you how many bytes you have recieved/send. It will show you how many packets you have recieved/send.....

edit: (above is only is true if you have a lan-card for example with broadband..)

....There is a very big difference there! A packet usual consists of hundreds of bytes... The bytesize of packets can be altered.

speeds don't have anything todo with the amount of data begin recieved/send... But this said, that tool can indeed also show the amount of bytes recieved/send...

there are some firewalls that show how many incoming bytes there are. google has a few

If you wanna know temporarly and without installing anything how much bytes are being send/recieved in XP, use the Task Manager and go to the Network tab (in the lower frame you see exactly how many are recieved/send as long as you keep your taskmanager open)...

Actually, since he's using Windows 98 with dial-up, I'm pretty sure you're wrong, because I have lots of experience with Win98 and dial-up...

WDZ: I'm not sure in 98, but in XP (and I th¡nk the same goes for 98) when you have dial-up, it shows the number of bytes and when you have a LAN card (for example in broadband) it shows the number of patckets.

Oh, OK... that's what I originally thought, but I wasn't sure... I couldn't test it because my modem is unplugged. I figured the units would be consistent for all connections, because it's basically the same status window...

yes, look at these two windows:


at the right you have the properties of my LAN card (connected to the ADSL router). It shows packets ("paquetes"). At the left you have the properties of the VPN (virtual private network) if have over the other connection. Windows (XP) treats it as if it was a dial-up connection and shows the bytes sent throught that interface
