That is true, however this
only applies to links you click from within Firefox. External programs handle links diffrent and thus the middle-mousebutton will have a other function most of the time in external programs.

Unfortunately Firefox does not have such a setting (yet).
What you can do is use the Tabbrowser Preferences extension to get this functionallity. I recommend the lit version if you only use it for opening external links in tabs.
- Get either the lite or full version of TBP (instructions are based on thhe lite version) from here: http://www.pryan.org/mozilla/site/TheOneKEA/tabprefs/#link .
- Click install, close all Firefox windows and start it again.
- In Firefox, go to: "Tools" > "Extensions" > "TBP Lite" and double-click it.
- At "External" you can set it to "Load external links in: New Tab".
