Ok so I gave my mom my old pc which was a Celeron 566MHz Over Clocked to 637MHz. Ok so when I was last using it I had Windows XP Pro retail on it all was well until I could no longer boot (HDD had crashed). So i built a new one. Now my mom was using the PC with her old 1.18 GB hard drive. Then that crashed (PS, It had Win98 on it). So she buys a Maxtor 40gb HDD yesterday and I install Windows fine. (I actually installed Windows with the HDD in my computer cause a 2x CD Rom drive will take forever!). I was able to get into windows now. So i take the drive out and rewire the basement so she can have internet for her computer. I go upstairs to hook it up and no boot. When I try to load it to Safe Mode it freezes at Mup.sys any idea what the hell it is for? I am wondering if its a power issue because she was able to use it fine with Win98. Maybe I should just install 98 and take off XP.

Well, Matty, the problem probably is because of network. I searched "mup.sys" in Google and found lots of information related to "Windows 2000 hangs at mup.sys while booting"...etc. For example, here is one: http://www.computing.net/windows2000/wwwboard/forum/41160.html

I think those apply to Win2K should work similarly for WinXP...give it a try

thanks for the reply but the Drivers for the Network card haven't been loaded, nothing has been installed but the os

I suggest that you reinstall windows because when I update something in my pc windows needs to be reinstalled

so I suggest you build in the "fast" cd-rom drive from your other pc for the 2x cd-rom drive and then install windows

Change your multiplier and FSB settings back to factory default seeing it is overclocked, because it could be overheating or something - and yes, sometimes it doesnt register as an overheat when the machine does. I doubt its a power issue either, Windows XP does not drain anymore power than 98.

I would say its the overclocking, the motherboard, or you're just having bad karma recently

Actually the problem is that you installed your windows in another computer, with a lot diferent hardware including the cpu, motherboard... and when windows tries to boot on the other computer it tries to load the drivers wich are installed and don't match the hardware...   Just install windows again from the computer it will stay on, and you should be fine!

I agree with theRabbit, you must install it in the computer it is ment to run it. Also if it is a older motherboard it may not accept large hard drives like a 40GB. And try setting your BIOS to its defult settings since you over clocked it.

Well I just said forget about it and installed Win98 on it, my mom doesn't need XP or anything like that so its ok.
