No... NotePad opens the files but the contents appear as garbage charcaters...as though they are still encrypted...also I'm not prompted for the password when I open the files.

The enchipted chat log files shouldn't be opened with notepad but with msgplus.exe instead. If when you double click a *.ple file you see notepad with weird characters do this:
Right click the file and choose Open with > Choose program (if you aren't on XP, shift + right click with show the open with entry at the menu). Now you have to choose msgplus.exe and check the box that says that you want to always open *.ple files with that program (msgplus.exe). Click ok and you'll be prompted to enter the password. If it's correct, notepad will be opened with the decoded file.
