when you install paintshop pro it changes it to open all your files to open with it,  all you have to do is what bach_m said at the beginning of the thread to open all your files in what you used to...(or right click>prperties> open with "lala thing"

this thread confused me a bit but thats how you solve the problem i am thinking you're having. and dont get mad if this is not what you meant, this is what i understood from your thread.

Well, when you install it you can choose which filetypes to associate (now, where did I heared something similar about reading stuff at setup-time?)

He's dropped the association of the files with paintshop. It's just that the icons that identify files (with file types) haven't been remembered. It has those unknown application icons.

It's fixed now. I dunno if this did it but I repaired IE and then rebooted and they were like there. But .bmp don't have it's icon. Should I re-install paint?

That would have helped in the first place, yes....
