whenever i start a webcam conversation with anybody i get this alert from norton internet security. the "Intruder" is my own computer "SMALLPC" and the ip trace of 0.1.0.4. traces to a different place everytime first it was San Jose now Los Angoles does any know what this is and if i can stop it?

This is what norton tells me:

Intrusion: Invalid Destination IP Address
Intruder: SMALLPC(192.168.0.200)
Risk Level: Low
Source IP address: SMALLPC(192.168.0.200)
Destination IP address: 0.1.0.4. This IP address is invalid.
Protocol: TCP.

THere may be a wrong configuration somewhere, but you have to give more information about these things:
Windows version (including service pack)
Firewalls in your PC (you have the one of norton, but also the winXP SP2 one?
Internet connection? (dial-up modem?, adsl modem? adsl router? (with firewall?))
Are you using UPnP?
Messenger version?
finally, can you start the convo?

Well, I'd suggest to check first the configuration of the firewall of norton. Then the config. of the firewall of Win XP SP2 (if applies), you can also check your router's fw and upnp, and you can also try to reinstall messenger.

Windows XP sp2
norton internet security and sp2 firewall
adsl internet via wireless network, my pc doenst get it directly
i dont know what UPnP is
latest version of Messenger cant remember what its called..
and yes the conversation starts i just get a security alert

i'd disable one of them... two firewalls in the same Pc is a bit useless.. make tests to know which one.

so it's probably an adsl router. They use to have a built-in firewall. You may need to open the needed ports there or enable UPnP

Universal Plug'n'Play
Applications can use UPnP to "talk" directly to the router/firewall so they can configure it to open the needed ports and do NAT correctly (Network Address Translation). If your router has that option you may want to enable it (n some cases it may be a security risk, but I don't think it's a very high risk. I have it enabled without problems for a lot of time and now with th firewall of XPSP2 the risk decreases (and even more in your case, having another fw)

well, does norton prompt you to always show that, or does it give you the option to remember your answer or similar? Maybe you should check the configuration of norton firewall.

its not a router, one of my computers has the internet via a usb port, which then is accessed by the other computers on the network by a wireless network.

norton just says this event has happened would you like to view more information about it. i havent been able to find a way to configure this. i can forward ports directly from one pc to the other through the windows firewall, but the norton one doesnt affect any of my forwarded ports. but if this was the case i think that i would just not be able to send webcam at all.

LoL according to Norton the intruder is yourself (192.168 IP address) or another on your network.  It is probably a NAT problem, make sure UnPnP is enabled on your router and firewalls.

yes.. the intruder is my own computer SMALLPC

EDIT: i added all of the computers with ip addresses 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.0.255 to my norton trusted zone and it still happened

you should have said that before Check the configuration of that computer and yours (default gateway, etc...) I think that there may be the problem

how would the configuration of my gateway affect this pcs norton firewall?

i have NIS and use a webcam and dont come across this problem.
