We're not talking about links here, we're talking about the hotmail inbox. I know that MSN calls some COM stuff with Internet Explorer for that (POST data), would be weird if that somehow launched netscape Someone with hotmail check this please
Well, my apologizes for misunderstanding the toppost. from the second post on I thought it was about the normal links in MSN Messenger (which is also brought up (too) many times).
Clicking on "you have x new mails" while you have disabled the POP3 feature in Plus! indeed opens up MSIE.

No it depends on what engine is being used. Since Maxthon and Avant browser are both kind of a wrapped skin around MSIE, it still opens MSIE...

No it doesn't...adding these registry entries will make it work with Maxthon
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\shell\open\ddeexec]
@="\"file://%1\",,-1,,,,,"
"NoActivateHandler"=""
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\shell\open\ddeexec\Application]
@="Maxthon"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\shell\open\ddeexec\Topic]
@="WWW_OpenURL"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\ddeexec]
@="\"%1\",,-1,0,,,,"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\ddeexec\Application]
@="Maxthon"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\ddeexec\Topic]
@="WWW_OpenURL"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\https\shell\open\ddeexec]
@="\"%1\",,-1,0,,,,"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\https\shell\open\ddeexec\Application]
@="Maxthon"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\https\shell\open\ddeexec\Topic]
@="WWW_OpenURL"

O_O
Wow... who would want to add all those keys just so a single link opens up in their default browser?

Oh, I understand now. Thank you

yes it does, the solution you gave doesn't mean that it isn't based upon the engine.
All it does is proving that those browsers don't set the correct registry keys when you select them as the default browser.
Also, those keys are correctly changed by browsers like Netscape, Mozilla, etc. and yet MSIE is still launched when you click on "you have x new emails" without having StuffPlug-NG. Those keys have very little (if not nothing) todo with that.
Those keys are, however, important when you select your default browser.
EDIT: added italic part, after the discussion with uryan, to make it more clear

RE: Open hotmail in Default browser
Well IE's it's not launched on my system when I click "you have x new emails" With Maxthon set as default browser, and those registry entries set, it open in Maxthon, in a new tab if it is already running, and opens it if it is not currently running. (Edit: This is with SPNG installed)

RE: Open hotmail in Default browser
given that and the fact that it doesn't work for other browsers (editing those keys accordingly of course), it proofs that it (also) depends on something else though.

Actually, most people would only have to modify this one
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\shell\open\ddeexec\Application]
@="Maxthon"
the rest are just included for completeness

RE: Open hotmail in Default browser
I use Avant browser and when i click the e-mail link it opens it up nicely in Avant (using SPNG)..normal urls however (wether its in a convowindow or on a tab) still open in MSIE. I have not modified my regkeys manually.

then it depends on something else, as this will not work for other browsers...
Strange...I just set mozilla as my default browser, and it worked fine with that too...and then with firefox too
Conclusion...it is not the browser that is the problem

That only changes the used application name of the process that is going to handle the HTML file when you double click a HTML file or when a HTML file is openend. AKA, it changes the HTML file association. This has certainly nothing todo with the "you have x new email links".

Without StuffPlug-NG and with a disabled POP3 feature in Plus! and with an hotmail account and you did click on "you have x new emails"?
Because we are not talking about normal links, like TB pointed out (which mistake I also made with my first post in this thread). And the registry keys you show have only something todo with file associations and thus normal links, so make sure you're talking about the very same thing.
Cause I know that all mozilla based browsers, among others, can be set as default browser an they will be started up when you click a normal link; that's not the issue here...
