make sure you enable the option of showing emoticons in chats in the messenger options (tools > options). Depending on the version of messenger that option can be in several places inside the options window, but it isn't hard to find.

The smilies in nicks: you won't see them if you use custom names of plus. To disable it go to Plus > Preferences > Contact list > custom names.

Any chance of fixing this custom name problem in a future version?

No.

THat limitation has been there since Patchou added the custom names feature. It's very unlucky that it can be fixed in a near future.

I didn't wanted to open a new topic soI hope this is allright. Just to get things clear. When enabling the custom names for your contacts in the contact list but not in the chatwindow, MSN won't show emoticons in your contact's names in a chat window?
Hope someone can straighten this out for me

It's a limitation. Simply put, when you use Custom Names, Messenger Plus! uses view by email and it replaces the email address of your contacts with your custom names for them. Because Messenger knows email addresses cannot contain emoticons, they won't be displayed.

Okay, thanks but is that only for the Contact List? Cause in the chatwindows I didn't enable Custom Names so the original names are shown only without emoticons. How come?

Same thing. Once you use custom names, Messenger will use 'view by email' everywhere in Messenger and replace that email address with the custom name. Because you don't see emoticons in the main window anyway you don't notice it there, but you do notice it in the conversation windows

okay, but why is it that when there's an alert or something and the name is shown, i suddenly can see the emoticons?

I understand that msgplus has to overrule the way MSN shows names when Custom Names is enabled for the contact list. But why does MSGplus also overrule the standard way of MSN to show names (with emoticons in the chat windows), when it's not needed?
