Unwanted desktop icons

Hey, does anyone know how to get rid of unwanted desktop icons? I've tried dragging it to the recycle bin; highlighting it and deleting it; right-clicking on it, but no menu comes up and it doesn't move, it just stays there. If you double-click on the icon, it links to a site window. Has anyone had anything like this?

Stuff like bingo, printer cartridges, travel, card games.. they all relate to lop.com, its a search engine or something *-)
