it connects to a pci slot !!! (like chris said) which enables you to have upto 8 ide drives (even more on some motherboards) so on mot mother boards that will be 4 connect straigh to the motherboard and 4 connect to the controller that is plugin into a PCI slot

is there a way to see if my motherboard supports SATA without opening it up to have a look, like will something like SiSoft Sandra tell me?

mmm Just buy some PCI ATA expansion card (I don't know the real name of that device) but I have seen it and it works greate...

The one that I have seen comes with 2 ATA conectors for 4 devices
