does anyone know where conversation archives are stored? I have found them before but it's in some obscure location that I now can't locate.

What do you mean? Chat logs ? are found on my Documents folder

the default location for Plus! chat logs is %My Documents%\My Chat Logs

I'm not sure about the MSN chat logs

MSN chat logs are in My documents too.. My conversations i think

I'm using msn messenger v6.2.

It's not in any of those locations which you have said

In MSN messenger go to Personal settings>Messages>Message History see the location and if that option is Checked (Automatically keep a History of my conversations) or go to Plus!>Preferences>Logging

if its plus logs its simply Plus! => Open Log Files
for msn logs its Tools => Options => Messages    here you can see the location of the logs
