O.P. new msg plus! suggestion
I've always wanted a notification of new e-mail i have after I come back from being 'away'. It would be just like when you first sign in.

I am mostly just concerned with my hotmail email, will this also work for that or just my POP3 mail.

As long as you didn't checked your mail, your (new) email count for hotmail will just be displayed in the default place anyways:
