If you knew that would be called "hacking" and that's illegal

naah, you can use the client id to check. although trillian might be sending an official msn client id.

If you use IM2 messenger it tells you what version they are using and what features they have and that you can run with them.

I Prefer IM2 to Trillian, IM2 is a bit buggy at the moment though :-( [Should be fixed in version 1.6, then the msn like skin will come out and i'll say bye bye to MSN Messenger 7 :)]

Well, you could always try to send them a Nudge/Wink.
Or you could like M_e said check the Client Id, fx ver. 6.0 uses MSNC1 witch is 268435456
6.1 uses MSNC2 witch is 536870912
6.2 uses MSNC3 witch is 805306368
7.0 uses MSNC5 witch is 1073741824

Clients like Trilian and Gaim uses Client Caps to identify themselvs :)

You don't. You'd need to create your own client, or do some modifying to your current client. Not something simple.

The previous sentence is false. The following sentence is true.
