if it's a new virus it will take a few days before norton can detect it.

Further to the last post made about blocked file extensions, we have found the full list of blocked file extensions. If you need to send files with these extensions over MSN Messenger, it would be best to send them in a zip file.

The full list of extensions is as follows:

.ade .adp .app .asp .bas .bat .cer .chm .cmd .com .cpl
.crt .csh .exe .fxp .hlp .hta .inf .ins .isp .its .js .jse .ksh .lnk
.mad .maf .mag .mam .maq .mar .mas .mat .mau .mav
.maw .mda .mdb .mde .mdt .mdw .mdz .msc .msi .msp .mst
.ops .pcd .pif .prf .prg .pst .reg .scf .scr .sct .shb .shs .tmp
.url .vb .vbe .vbs .vsd .vsmacros .vss .vst .vsw .ws .wsc .wsf .wsh

if you try and send a file with one of these extensions, your contact will recieve this message:

emailhere@msn.com tried to send you a file (filename.extension). This file has been blocked because it is potentially unsafe.

On another note, it seems that the message that appears stating that the file is blocked appears in a different window than the one sending it. Confusing!

you didnt, but that is the post on mess.be about msn messenger 7.0.0732 that is set to block those file extensions.

those extensions are dangerous and may contain virus

it blocks .pif files which are the known Bropia spreading files.

thats why i posted files extensions :dodgy:

In MSN Messenger you can set a virus scanner to scan any file you recieve. This is done by going to:
Tools > Options > Messages > File Transfer > "Scan files for viruses using:".

In that box enter the path and file name to your scanner and add the appropiate parameters to it if necessary.

----

And with a simple 'trick' you can even delete every recieved file immediatly as soon as it is recieved:

In this way, you don't need any scanner, plugin or whatever to be installed. Although this setting can of course be disabled by your little brother if he's 'clever' enough.... (but don't forget to disable it when you use messenger)

----

Another thing you can do is to set up a restricted Windows account for your brother. Virusses could still harm the system though, but it would be a bit less devestating (unless you totaly restrict him from doing anything of course).
