The (mp3) sounds displayed in the dialog box have nothing to do with Messenger Plus!; it is just a normal Windows open file dialog box which lists sounds by their filename, nothing more (so no check is performed either to see if it is even a valid (mp3) sound).
Thus as Brian suggested:

Are you sure they are mp3 files, like, end with the extension .mp3?
And also, make sure those missing files of yours aren't hidden and/or that you also have the option "show hidden files" in the windows explorer settings checked.
If you do mean something else, then please elaborate more and take a screenshot of what you exactly mean

As for all the other suggestions, they all deal about formats, sizes, compatibility, etc. (and are often wrong). All these suggestions and questions have nothing to do with the problem reported by Demz because, as I said in the first paragraph, nothing is checked in the open file dialog. The dialog simply lists files by name as they are provided by Windows itself, nothing more...

Well demz ... the problem is that i think (afaik) u can only add .wav's atm.
no, you can add all the filetypes supported by the Libsndfile library, see
http://www.mega-nerd.com/libsndfile/. (Even a simply check in Messenger Plus! itself; simply trying to add a sound, would have revealed that. So check these things first before saying something like that)

Again, not true. Check these things first before assuming something...
