I've been using the word filter because my friend is always writing one word wrong, and it bugs me. But why can't the size of the replacement text exceed the size of the original text.

This is a safety reason. The total length of text is limited by the MSN Messenger protocol. And this Plus! filter limit is there to make sure you don't exceed the total maximum allowed text length.
