The beta version of the program would work fine, but any attempt to update, whether over the top or uninstalling the beta first results in the program crashing as soon as it loads. Happens with or without msgr plus loaded

Any ideas?

Try doing a clean install:
- Uninstall Messenger
- Delete C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\
- Reboot
- Install

I'm now actually getting the opposite problem: Messenger crashes when I quit it . Not a big problem, just weird.

As for your problems, all that can be suggested is a clean reinstall.

clean install doesn't work

no version above the .0824 beta ever worked - and now that i *must* update according to MS i can't use it

Is your Windows up to date?
Are you using any skins/patches/add-ons?
Have you uninstalled Windows Messenger (XP only)?

i have several other problems with my machine - going to do a repair instal of windows
