Does anybody know what the recommended size for a background in the conversation window is? i mean dimension wise

485 x 422 pixels is the size of the 'default' Messenger backgrounds (which you can find as JPG images with a DAT extension in the %AppData%\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\user id\Backgrounds folder).

I believe that's how Messenger stores all it's picture data, apart from animated custom emoticons, which remain GIFs.
